Finding Work
Posted On 01/18/2008 15:20:51 by carpentryexperts

Just looking for some feedback  from  craftsmen and contractors out there.

Where is the work?, not even so much the money at this point!  We have been surviving on the residential market for about 10 years, taking home about 55k year

Currently traveling to Springfield MA to stay alive. The only work we are finding is on multifamily/ apartment rehab developments. We hope this site helps with the networking. Advertising is not doing it for us. Everyone is shopping for the quick fix or lowest price to get minimal done.

I don't know where the work is.  I have been wondering if it is because I havn't built a solid enough reputation.  Most all of my work has been referells from satisfied customers.  That network has dried up and now I don't know where to turn.

Do I start advertising? From what you are saying that may not be a good option.  So networking may be the way to go.  We need to be carful that we don't start playing cut throat.

Here is an idea: let's say someone has a job and they are making a fair wage. Now if they could hire an extra hand or two, skilled carpenters or tradesmen that have no work.  These carpenters or tradesmen would work for a day or two at a reduced rate. This would give them a little income and allow the person who has the job to make a decent wage.  People will get to know one another and there skill levels, which net working is all about.  At the same time not giving the discount to the general public.  Once the general public starts to get low bids it is going to hurt everyone.  Then the only alternative is for tradesmen to find other work untill the number of trades people drop off enough to start raising prices again.

I hope this is helpful.

My recent research of the economy and construction outlook points towards the medical industry. My next goal is to make contacts with construction  firms that have been servicing that market. Does anyone have contacts here?

I have been doing worse we the conventional newspaper. Noone buys the paper anymore! Mostly friends, family past customers. Potential customers are broke or a sticker shocked with pricing. Basically pricing out T&M and it aint enough!
